Okayama University Opened Jakarta Office for Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office), Jakarta in Indonesia

On September 24, Okayama University held an opening ceremony for its new office for the Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office), located in Darma Persada University (UNSADA) in Jakarta, Indonesia. At the ceremony, the office opening was celebrated by a total of 60 representatives from 16 Indonesian governmental and educational institutions, including Minister NAGAI Katsuro from the Embassy of Japan in Indonesia; Director rer. nat. Nandi, S.Pd., M.T., M.Sc., Directorate of International Affairs from Indonesia University of Education; and Rector Agus Salim Dasuki, M. Eng. from Darma Persada University (UNSADA). Additionally, Vice President for International Affairs and Alumni SUZUKI Takayoshi, Professor IGUCHI Toshihiro from Faculty of Health Sciences, and other representatives attended to represent Okayama University. From SixERS (The Consortium of Six National University in Japan composed of Chiba University, Niigata University, Kanazawa University, Okayama University, Nagasaki University, and Kumamoto University), which is the partner institution of this project, Executive Vice President for Education and International Affairs OZAWA Hiroaki, Director for International Affairs TATEISHI Koji, and Senior Specialist TSUKADA Kaori, International Affairs Division from Chiba University; Associate Professor HIROKAWA Satoshi from Institute of Education and Student Affairs, Niigata University; Advisor to the President ABE Soichiro from Kanazawa University; and Executive Director KAKUTA Kenji, International Affairs Department from Kumamoto University were in attendance. In his congratulatory address, Minister Nagai from the Embassy of Japan in Indonesia expressed his high expectations that the office's initiatives will lead to the development of human resources to serve as a bridge between Japan and Indonesia. Referring to the importance of the education sector in Indonesia, Rector Agus Salim Dasuki, M.Eng. of UNSADA expressed his welcome, “I hope that today's opening ceremony, where all concerned parties come together, will be a milestone in further strengthening the relationship between Indonesia and Japan. I trust that working together to achieve great results can have a positive effect on friendly relations between our two countries, not only in the education sector, but also in many other aspects.” After the ceremony, a commemorative workshop on the recent trend of Study in Japan was held by Okayama University. Then the Study in Japan seminar was held jointly by the SixERS, participated by approximately 400 high school and university students from the vicinity of UNSADA who wish to study in Japan. At the seminar, the SiERS representatives took the stage to introduce their respective universities and strongly appeal the attractiveness of Study in Japan. From Okayama University, Professor Iguchi gave an overview of the university and life in Okayama during Study in Japan, while Study in Japan Coordinator YAJIMA Kaori explained the project and introduced Japanese culture. The seminar provided a great opportunity for participants’ better understanding of Japan and Japanese universities. From here on, in cooperation with universities, other educational institutions, and alumni associations, the Jakarta office will extend full-scale support to Indonesian students who wish to study in Japan. ● What is the Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office)? Okayama University was appointed to implement the “Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office)” by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) - Japan in 2024. We aim to increase the number of international students from ASEAN by 2.7 times (103,861 students) in 5 years. In the previous phases, Okayama University was commissioned by MEXT - Japan to implement the “Coordinator for Study in Japan (Myanmar)” in 2014, aiming to double the number of students from Myanmar over a 5-year period. As a result, we were able to triple the number of students in 4 years, achieving our goal one year ahead. In 2018, the name of the project was changed to the “Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN,” which was recommissioned in 2019 for another 5 years, and the target region was expanded to 10 ASEAN countries. Currently, we have five overseas offices: Yangon, Mandalay, Bangkok, Phnom Penh, and Vientiane. In 2024, we will establish new ones in Indonesia and Malaysia, the most priority countries of the current phase, and will work from these bases to recruit excellent international students from ASEAN for Study in Japan.

Okayama University Opened ITS Office for Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office), Indonesia

On September 17, Okayama University held an opening ceremony for its new office for the Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office), located in Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Surabaya in Indonesia. At the ceremony, the office opening was celebrated by Rector Bambang Pramujati, Ph.D. and other representatives from ITS and Vice President KISHIDA Mitsuyo from Kumamoto University, SixERS member (The Consortium of Six National University in Japan composed of Chiba University, Niigata University, Kanazawa University, Okayama University, Nagasaki University, and Kumamoto University), which is a partner institution of this project. Additionally, Professor KADOTA Isao from the Faculty of Environment, Life, Natural Science and Technology and Director KAWAGUCHI Katsumi of International Affairs Department were in attendance, representing Okayama University. In his congratulatory address, Rector Bambang Pramujati, Ph.D. gave his encouragement and high expectations to the ITS office that the information on Study in Japan to be provided by the office will encourage students to open the doors to study in Japan. Vice President Kishida extended her willingness to work not only for Study in Japan, but also for further friendship and cooperation between Indonesia and Japan, and to provide opportunities to foster a global mindset. Professor Kadota expressed his expectations that the opening of the ITS office will further promote inter-university exchange between Indonesia and Japan. After the opening ceremony, a commemorative seminar on the office opening was held jointly by Kumamoto University and Okayama University, participated by 80 ITS students. Following the icebreaker and Study in Japan and scholarship information session by Study in Japan Coordinator YAJIMA Kaori, Vice President Kishida and Professor Kadota took the stage to introduce the attractiveness of respective universities and programs. In the future, based in the ITS Office, we will promote Study in Japan from Indonesia by all-Japan effort through visiting high schools and universities in and around the region to provide consultations and seminars on Study in Japan. ● What is the Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office)? Study in Japan Fair 2023 for Myanmar was held online

As a part of Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN, Okayama University hosted the “Study in Japan Fair 2023 for Myanmar”, an online fair for Myanmar people who wish to study in Japan and their supervisors in Myanmar, from 25th to 26th August 2023. The purpose of the fair was to promote Study in Japan from Myanmar and to support the whole process from an entrance to university to employment by providing the relevant information on Study in Japan, university admission, scholarships, job hunting and employment in Japan. The fair was organized by the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA), and Okayama University, with the cooperation of Myanmar-Japan Platform for Human Resource Development (MJPF). The fair provided the following as the main contents: 1) special website, 2) online general information seminar, 3) online group consultations. Throughout the fair, we could provide information on studying and working in Japan to 2,024 participants of this fair. On the special website, Japan Student Services Organization, IUCHI Foundation, Myanmar-Japan Collaboration Project for Fostering Medical Human Resources in addition to MAJA as an organizer and MJPF as a cooperator, contributed to providing promotional materials and videos to study and work in Japan. Besides, information on the 18 participating universities from Japan was also made available and accessible on the website. The online general information seminar was attended by 488 Myanmar people. At the beginning of the seminar, H. E. MARUYAMA Ichiro, Ambassador of the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, Dr. Myo Khin, President of MAJA, and Prof. SUZUKI Takayoshi, Vice President for International Affairs of Okayama University gave opening remarks. Afterwards, 12universities, including Okayama University, introduced respective universities, and MAJA and Okayama University Japan Educational Information Center (OJEIC) provided basic information on studying in Japan and scholarships. In the group consultations, 18 universities including Okayama University, and the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, MAJA hold sessions. A total of 1,120 Myanmar participants received explanations of each institution and had the opportunity to directly ask questions to professors and current international students from Myanmar. At the Okayama University’s session, 2 current students and 3 prospective students enrolling in October gave presentations on their study in Japan experiences, followed by a lively Q&A session. From these 5 bases, we will work to recruit excellent international students from ASEAN for study in Japan.

Study in Japan Weeks 2022 in Myanmar was held online

As a part of Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN, Okayama University hosted the “Study in Japan Weeks 2022 in Myanmar”, an online fair for Myanmar people who wish to study in Japan and their supervisors in Myanmar, from 8th August to 9th September 2022. It has been about 2 years since the last fair for Myanmar was held on such a large scale. The fair was organized by the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA), and Okayama University, with the cooperation of Myanmar-Japan Platform for Human Resource Development (MJPF). The purpose of the fair was to promote Study in Japan from Myanmar and to support the whole process from an entrance to university to employment by providing the relevant information on Study in Japan, university admission, scholarships, job hunting and employment in Japan. The fair provided the following as the main contents: 1) Study in Japan information on the special website, 2) online general information seminars on Study in Japan and universities by organizers and participating universities, 3) online group consultations by participating universities. Throughout the fair, we could provide information on studying and working in Japan to 2,108 participants of this fair. On the special website, IUCHI Foundation, in addition to MAJA as an organizer and MJPF as a cooperator, contributed to providing promotional materials and videos to study and work in Japan. Besides, information on the 15 participating universities from Japan was also made available and accessible on the website. At the beginning of the online general information seminar, H. E. MARUYAMA Ichiro, Ambassador of the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, Dr. Myo Khin, President of MAJA, and Prof. SUZUKI Takayoshi, Vice President for International Affairs of Okayama University gave opening remarks and expressed their pleasure to be able to hold the fair after an interval of 2 years. Then, 11 universities, including Okayama University, introduced respective universities, and MAJA and Okayama University Japan Educational Information Center (OJEIC) provided basic information on studying in Japan and scholarships. In total, 1,037 Myanmar people participated in the seminar. In the group consultations, 14 universities including Okayama University, and the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, MAJA hold sessions. A total of 1,474 Myanmar participants received explanations of each institution and had the opportunity to directly ask questions to professors and current international students from Myanmar. At the Okayama University’s session, Associate Professor INAMORI Takao from Institute of Global Human Resource Development introduced the university, and 3 Myanmar students currently studying at Okayama University gave presentations on their study in Japan experiences in Okayama, followed by a lively Q&A session. In 2020-2021, Okayama University hosted the fair for Cambodia and Laos for the first time, and 2 fairs for Myanmar. We attended “the 5th ASEAN+3 Rectors’ Conference” and delivered presentation on Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN

The ASEAN+3 Rectors’ Conference was held on 14th October 2021 online, and Study in Japan Coordinator NII Yusuke attended as a representative of Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN. The ASEAN+3 Rectors’ Conference is a platform consists of executives from AUN (ASEAN University Network) member universities (30 universities from 10 countries) and 18 universities from Japan, China, and South Korea. Its aim is to learn and exchange knowledge about challenges for future collaboration among ASEAN+3 network. Kanazawa University which is a member of the Consortium of Six National Universities (Chiba University, Niigata University, Kanazawa University, Okayama University, Nagasaki University, and Kumamoto University) hosted the conference this year. There were more than 100 participants at the conference and the main theme was “ASEAN+3 University Education and Graduate Employability: Sharpening the Edge”. In the conference, we had an honor to have a session to introduce Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN. After President Makino explained outline of the project and a promotional video was played, Study in Japan Coordinator Nii conducted a presentation about the project. In his presentation, he shared our achievement, prospect, and a feasibility of future collaboration between AUN member universities and this project. He also said “Most importantly, we play a role as a bridge between ASEAN and Japan in terms of education and research collaboration. We collaborate with wide range of institutions such as Ministry of Education, educational institutions including universities, alumni associations, and so on. We have been striving to not only expand new relationship but also deepen existing networks.” In our project, we will cooperate with AUN member universities and other institutions, and continue to provide useful information to ASEAN students who wish to study in Japan, universities and other educational institutions. ▼Promotional movie

Calling For Okayama University (Faculty of Agriculture) Scholarship for the students from ASEAN Countries (Preliminary Education in Oct. 2021 and Undergraduate Admission in April 2022)

2021 APPLICATION FOR CANDIDATE SELECTION OF JAPANESE GOVERNMENT (MEXT) SCHOLARSHIP (For Global Agriscience Program Preliminary Education in Faculty of Agriculture, Okayama University. Application Period March 15, 2021 to May 5, 2021. Period of Scholarship The scholarship period is effective for total education period (four and a half years). (Preliminary Education 6 months + University Undergraduate Course 4 years) Scholarship Benefits Allowance: 117,000 yen per month. Admission and tuition fees will be paid by Okayama University. Qualifications for Application Applicant must meet all of the following requirements. (1) Applicants must meet one of the following conditions by September 2021. ① Applicants must have completed 12 years of school education. Calling For Honjo International Scholarship Foundation

Honjo International Scholarship Foundation Guideline of Application for the Foreign Students’ Scholarship Fall 2021 (Application Period: April 1 ~ May 5, 2021) Outline of Scholarship 1. This scholarship is open to foreign students who will attend a graduate school at a Japanese university. 2. The payment of the scholarship money will be issued starting from September 2021 onwards. 3. The scholarship recipient is under no obligation to repay the amount they receive from our Foundation. 4. The period of the scholarship for the recipient is set in accordance with the shortest period of time required to complete the intended degree. 4.1. ¥200,000 per month for 1 or 2 years 4.2. ¥180,000 per month for 3 years 4.3. ¥150,000 per month for 4 years or 5 years * The student is not allowed to change his / her course after the scholarship period has commenced. * Those whose enrollment period is shorter than one year are not eligible to apply. 5. The travel grant to cover the expenses to attend an international conference will be provided to scholarship recipients, based on our scholarship provision rules. 6. The scholarship recipient is not permitted to receive any other scholarship in conjunction with the scholarship offered by our Foundation. 7. The scholarship recipient cannot gain employment other than part-time jobs related to his / her studies such as teaching assistant, research assistant, or related to international exchange affairs such as translators or interpreters while receiving our scholarship. 8. The scholarship recipient is required to participate in the individual interview and the events that the foundation organizes. 9. After graduating from our foundation, the scholarship recipient is required to attend our alumni events. Number of Scholarships Available A few students Requirements (To be eligible for applying our scholarship, the student must satisfy ALL of the requirement criteria shown below.) 1. The student who does not possess Japanese citizenship 2. The student must be enrolled as of Fall 2021 or currently applying for the academic course starting from Fall 2021 at a graduate school in Japan. Those who are already enrolled and those who are not enrolled yet (including people who are currently employed with jobs at the time of applying for the program) are both eligible to apply for this scholarship if you are going to be enrolled in Fall 2021. Those who are going to enter graduate schools in Spring 2022 should apply for the 2022 program which starts accepting applications from September 1 to October 30, 2021 (scheduled). 3. In principle, the student enrolling in a professional graduate school is not eligible to apply. However, the student who can submit a research plan is eligible to apply. 4. The enrollment duration until graduation must be longer than 12 months. 5. To be eligible, the student applying for the PhD program must start the PhD course by the age of 35. Student applying for the master’s program must start the master course by the age of 30. 6. The student must have a strong will to serve in his / her home country as a future career plan. 7. The student must have a deep understanding of international friendship and goodwill, and must attend the events organized by the foundation and take part in the network as an alumni member. 8. Academic transcript (In Japanese or English; please attach a translation in case of other languages.) A-1. Academic transcript of the undergraduate course (Required) If you transferred into the university from the College of technology (kōsen school system), the transcript from that school is also required. A-2. Academic transcript of the graduate school (If you do not have the transcript, you do not need to submit it.) B. Research Proposal: Use the designated template and write in Japanese language. The template of the MS Word file is available on our website. What we want applicants to describe: B-1. What you are going to research B-2. What and how you are going to contribute to your home country based on what you will learn or study in Japan B-3. What you already achieved regarding research, academic, and social activity C. A recommendation letter from a supervisor: Please obtain a recommendation letter describing your academic performances, personal characteristics evaluation, future potential, etc. You can also obtain a recommendation letter from your previous supervisor in your country, if the recommender is familiar with your academic background. *The number of sheets and formats are not designated. *The recommender can send the recommendation letter directly to the foundation without sending it to the applicant. The letter should be sent from the recommender’s email account to info@hisf.or.jp no later than the date of the deadline. The application number should be included in the subject of the email. D. Documents that prove admission, such as an admission letter, a letter of acceptance, etc. Please upload the certificate of enrollment only if the student is already enrolling in the graduate school. * If the admission letter or the letter of acceptance is not available by May 5, 2021, please enter the probable date that is available on the “web application system” and then send it to the HISF office via email as soon as it is available. Note that, after May 6, 2021, you cannot log into the web application system. * Even if the envelopes are directed as “Confidential” or “Invalid if opened”, open all the envelopes and upload the documents as PDF files through the “scholarship web application system”. * Photocopied documents can also be used and uploaded. Miscellaneous notes on entry 1. Application documents are not required to be sent by post. 2. The data you input in the “web application system” can be rewritten or replaced at any time until May 5, 2021. The latest data is automatically overwritten. 3. Regarding the personal information written in the application documents, they will not be used for any other purposes than for the scholarship selection process. Selection Process 1. First selection (Screening of documents): The result of the first selection will be announced by June 30, 2021. The application numbers of the selected candidates will be posted on our website. 2. Second selection (Interview): Conducted in early July, in Tokyo or by video call. *The detailed schedule for the interview will be informed directly to those who pass the first selection process. *The definite date of the interview will be posted on our website when confirmed. 3. Final results of the scholarship award: July 31, 2021. *The application numbers of the selected candidates will be posted on our website. About Scholarship Payment 1. In the following cases scholarship payment can be stopped. The recipient may require to pay back the scholarship amount that has already been paid, according to the decision made by the Board of Directors. 1.1. When it is difficult to continue schooling or research due to illness or other reasons. 1.2. When the supervisor recognized that the recipient is ineligible for continuing study or conducting the research. 1.3. In case of academic achievement failure or worst behavior discovered. 1.4.
