Okayama University was appointed to implement the “Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office)” by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) - Japan in 2024. We aim to increase the number of international students from ASEAN by 2.7 times (103,861 students) in 5 years. In the previous phases, Okayama University was commissioned by MEXT - Japan to implement the “Coordinator for Study in Japan (Myanmar)” in 2014, aiming to double the number of students from Myanmar over a 5-year period. As a result, we were able to triple the number of students in 4 years, achieving our goal one year ahead. In 2018, the name of the project was changed to the “Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN,” which was recommissioned in 2019 for another 5 years, and the target region was expanded to 10 ASEAN countries. Currently, we have five overseas offices: Yangon, Mandalay, Bangkok, Phnom Penh, and Vientiane. In 2024, we will establish new ones in Indonesia and Malaysia, the most priority countries of the current phase, and will work from these bases to recruit excellent international students from ASEAN for Study in Japan.

We attended “the 5th ASEAN+3 Rectors’ Conference” and delivered presentation on Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN

The ASEAN+3 Rectors’ Conference was held on 14th October 2021 online, and Study in Japan Coordinator NII Yusuke attended as a representative of Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN. The ASEAN+3 Rectors’ Conference is a platform consists of executives from AUN (ASEAN University Network) member universities (30 universities from 10 countries) and 18 universities from Japan, China, and South Korea. Its aim is to learn and exchange knowledge about challenges for future collaboration among ASEAN+3 network. Kanazawa University which is a member of the Consortium of Six National Universities (Chiba University, Niigata University, Kanazawa University, Okayama University, Nagasaki University, and Kumamoto University) hosted the conference this year. There were more than 100 participants at the conference and the main theme was “ASEAN+3 University Education and Graduate Employability: Sharpening the Edge”. In the conference, we had an honor to have a session to introduce Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN. After President Makino explained outline of the project and a promotional video was played, Study in Japan Coordinator Nii conducted a presentation about the project. In his presentation, he shared our achievement, prospect, and a feasibility of future collaboration between AUN member universities and this project. He also said “Most importantly, we play a role as a bridge between ASEAN and Japan in terms of education and research collaboration. We collaborate with wide range of institutions such as Ministry of Education, educational institutions including universities, alumni associations, and so on. We have been striving to not only expand new relationship but also deepen existing networks.” In our project, we will cooperate with AUN member universities and other institutions, and continue to provide useful information to ASEAN students who wish to study in Japan, universities and other educational institutions. ▼Promotional movie
