Participation in Japanese Culture & Film Festival in Brunei

We participated in the Japan Cultural & Film Festival 2025 held in Brunei on November 15 to 16, as part of the “Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office)”. At our booth, in collaboration with the Brunei Association of Japan Alumni (BAJA), we provided comprehensive information and individual consultations on studying in Japan to a total of 245 visitors. Interest ranged from undergraduate and graduate programs to high school study opportunities, reflecting the diverse educational aspirations of attendees. H.E. Mr KIKUTA Yutaka, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Brunei Darussalam and Yang Mulia Dr Siti Norkhalbi binti Haji Wahsalfelah, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Culture) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sports also visited the venue and observed the booth. Launch of Study in Japan Information Corner at the Ministry of Education Language Centre (MOELC), Singapore

On October 24, we opened a Study in Japan Information Corner at the libraries of the Newton and Bishan campuses of the Ministry of Education Language Centre (MOELC) in Singapore, as part of the “Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office).” The newly established corner offers a wide range of resources, including general information about studying in Japan and brochures from Japanese universities. Students are welcome to browse these materials freely. We hope these resources will inspire more students to deepen their interest in pursuing higher education in Japan. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Mr. Samuel Yeong, head of Japanese department at MOLEC, for his invaluable contribution to establishing this corner. We would also like to convey our heartfelt appreciation to principals and teachers of MOELC, the Japanese University Graduates Association of Singapore (JUGAS), and the Japan Creative Centre of the Embassy of Japan in Singapore for their generous support and collaboration in this initiative. Okayama University remains committed to supporting Singapore students who aspire to study in Japan.

Launch of Official Instagram and Facebook Accounts for Vietnam

We are pleased to announce the official launch of our Instagram and Facebook accounts for Vietnam, established as part of the Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office), commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Japan. These newly launched accounts will primarily provide information in Vietnamese, targeting prospective students in Vietnam who are interested in studying in Japan. They will feature the latest updates on studying in Japan, Japanese universities, scholarship information, upcoming events, and more. Online Study in Japan Fair 2025 for Myanmar Successfully Held

Okayama University hosted the “Study in Japan Fair 2025 for Myanmar” online on August 29 and 30, as part of the“Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office).” The fair aimed to promote Study in Japan in Myanmar and to support the entire journey -from university admission to employment- by providing comprehensive information on application procedures, scholarships, job hunting, and career opportunities in Japan. The event was co-organized by the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA), and Okayama University, with cooperation from Myanmar-Japan Center for Human Resources Development (MJC), Myanmar-Japan Alliance Business Association, and Myanmar-Japan Platform for Human Resource Development. The fair consisted of three main components: 1) special website, 2) an online general information seminar, and 3) online group consultations. Throughout the fair, information on studying and working in Japan was provided to 2015 registered participants. The online general information seminar was attended by 289 participants from Myanmar. The event began with opening remarks from Mr. Shogo YOSHITAKE, Chargé d’affaires ad interim of Japan to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, Dr. Myo Khin, President of MAJA, and Prof. SUZUKI Takayoshi, Vice President for International Affairs and Alumni of Okayama University. Following the opening session, 14 universities introduced their institutions, including Associate Professor Dr. Inamori from Okayama University. In addition, MAJA, MJC and Okayama University Japan Educational Information Center (OJEIC) provided essential information on studying in Japan and available scholarships. During the group consultations, 20 universities, along with the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, MAJA and MJC held interactive sessions. A total of 824 Myanmar participants joined to hear presentations from each institution and directly ask questions to professors and current Myanmar students studying in Japan. In Okayama University’s session, Dr. HTOO HTOO SANDI KYAW an alumna of the university and currently a lecturer at the Faculty of Environmental, Life, Natural Science and Technology, gave an introduction to the university. In addition, two Myanmar students currently enrolled at the University shared their study in Japan experiences, followed by a lively Q&A session. Okayama University remains committed to supporting Myanmar students who aspire to study in Japan by continuing to host fairs, seminars and other activities that provide essential information and guidance. ●About the “Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office)” Okayama University has been appointed to implement the "Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office)" by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan since 2024. In this project, we aim to increase the number of international students from ASEAN to over 100,000 (double the number in 2023) in five years. Currently, we have nine overseas offices across six countries: Myanmar (Yangon and Mandalay), Thailand (Bangkok), Cambodia (Phnom Penh), Laos (Vientiane), Indonesia (Jakarta, Surabaya and the University of Indonesia) and Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur). Understanding Japanese Society Seminar: Cross‑Cultural Adaptation and Communication Style of Japanese People was Held in Hybrid

On June 14, the Okayama University Japan Educational Information Center (OJEIC) Myanmar office and the Japan Foundation Yangon held the hybrid event, “Understanding Japanese Society Seminar: Cross‑Cultural Adaptation and Communication Style of Japanese People”. As more young people from Myanmar seek opportunities to study and work in Japan, this seminar aimed to facilitate smoother cultural adaption in Japan by providing foundational insights into cross‑cultural adjustment and Japanese communication styles. Mr. Takeshi Asai (a lecturer at Meiji University, counselor at the Japan Foundation Japanese‑Language Institute in Urawa, and certified clinical psychologist) delivered a clear explanation of the mental health and stress challenges people often experience when adjusting to cross‑cultural environments. He shared practical coping strategies and explained how communication typically works in Japanese culture. Mr. Lwin Moe Aung, a second‑year student in the Discovery Program for Global Learners at Okayama University, shared his personal journey in Japan, highlighting how he managed culture shock. Dr. Thu Thu Nwe Aye, Associate Coordinator at OJEIC Yangon, provided information on studying in Japan, further deepening participants’ understanding of the process. During the seminar, participants had an opportunity to discuss life in a cross‑cultural environment, and Mr. Asai provided experts comments and advise. This seminar marked a new initiative to promote studying in Japan by focusing on cross‑cultural adaptation. Moving forward, we will continue to be proactive in organizing a variety of events aimed at supporting students from Myanmar and Southeast Asia in having fulfilling study abroad experiences in Japan.

Okayama University Opened Its Office for Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office) in Malaysia

On May 16, Okayama University (OU) held an opening ceremony for its new office for the Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office), located at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in Malaysia. The ceremony was celebrated by over 100 distinguished guests including His Excellency Mr. SHIKATA Noriyuki, Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia; YBhg. Dato’ Professor Ir. Dr. Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah, Vice Chancellor of UPM; Prof. Dr. Rosfarizan Mohamad, Dean of the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (FBSB) of UPM; and representatives from alumni associations, educational institutions, and other related organizations. In his congratulatory address, H.E. Mr. Shikata expressed his expectations for the project’s role in further strengthening the ties between Japanese and Malaysian universities. Dato’ Prof. Ir. Dr. Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah of UPM also shared his confidence in deepening educational and research collaboration between the two countries. President Dr. NASU of OU extended his sincere appreciation to all those who supported the establishment of the office and the project. A highlight of the event was the speech by Prof. Dr. Foo Hooi Ling of FBSB at UPM, who reflected on over 30 years of collaboration between UPM and OU, emphasizing their deep ties forged through their collaborative research projects. Prof. Dr. SUZUKI Takayoshi, Vice President for International Affairs and Alumni at OU, concluded the ceremony by introducing the project’s goals and activities. Prior to the ceremony, the OJEIC Opening Commemorative Seminar on Study in Japan was held, with participation from 90 UPM students, researchers, and faculty members. Representatives from SixERS* including Prof. Dr. ICHINOSE Yuki, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at OU, introduced their respective universities, distinctive research and academic programs. Dr. Siang Hee Tan, an alumnus of both UPM and OU, shared his personal experience of studying in Japan. Ms. SUGIYAMA Sachiko, a Study in Japan coordinator, provided general information on studying in Japan. Ms. FURUBAYASHI Rina and Ms. Farah Ammar from the Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur shared various programs and available grants. Last but not least, Mr. FUJII Hiroto from the Japan Science and Technology Agency introduced NEXUS and Sakura Science programs in relation to Japan-ASEAN cooperation. The seminar concluded with a successful interactive networking session between students and the speakers. In collaboration with universities, educational institutions, alumni associations and related organizations in both Malaysia and Japan, the new OJEIC Malaysia office is committed to supporting Malaysian students and individuals aspiring to study in Japan. *SixERs is the Consortium of Six National Universities in Japan consisting of Chiba University, Niigata University, Kanazawa University, OU, Nagasaki University, and Kumamoto University ● About the “Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office)”: The “Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office)” is a Japanese government initiative designed to accelerate the international mobility of students to and from Japan. OU was appointed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan to implement this project, which aims to double the number of international students from ASEAN regions to 103,861 within five years of the project period (April 2024 to March 2028). As of May 2025, the project has nine overseas offices in six countries: Myanmar (Yangon and Mandalay), Thailand (Bangkok), Cambodia (Phnom Penh), Laos (Vientiane), Indonesia (Jakarta, Surabaya and the University of Indonesia) and Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur). Promoting Study in Japan at the Emperor's Birthday Reception in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia

On February 13, the Malaysia Office of the Okayama University Japan Educational Information Center (OJEIC), operating under the “Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan” commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), participated in the Emperor of Japan’s Birthday Reception hosted by the Consular Office of Japan in Kota Kinabalu. At the event, OJEIC promoted study in Japan to distinguished guests, including the Chief Minister of Sabah, government officials, educators, and consular representatives from various countries. During the reception, the Chief Minister of Sabah, Tun Musa Aman, and H.E. Mr. Takayuki Shikata, Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia, delivered opening remarks and expressed their hopes for further strengthening the friendship between Sabah, Malaysia, and Japan. Alongside the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) and Japanese companies operating in the region, OJEIC hosted an information booth to promote study in Japan. The booth attracted many visitors, including local government officials, faculty members from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), and former international students and their families. This project places strong emphasis on enhancing collaboration with partner institutions, Japanese diplomatic missions, and private-sectors organizations. Going forward, we will continue to strengthen our networks with key stakeholders and carry out effective promotional activities tailored to Malaysia’s diverse cultural context, including participation in study abroad fairs and school outreach initiatives. ●Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan This project is the successor to earlier initiatives (the Study in Japan Coordinator Project and the Study in Japan Global Network Project) that began in 2014. Okayama University is responsible for Southeast Asia. Starting this fiscal year, Malaysia and Indonesia have been designated as priority countries, and we actively promoting Japanese Education in Southeast Asia, advancing the globalization of Japanese higher education institutions with our university at the core.

Study in Japan × Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM): Renewal Ceremony of the MOU and Academic Seminar held

On January 21, a ceremony and an academic seminar on studying in Japan were held at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), commemorating both the opening of Okayama University Japan Educational Information Center (OJEIC) and the renewal of the MOU. The event was organized under the "Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan," commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). Approximately 50 participants attended, including UPM’s Deputy Vice Chancellor Ismi Arif Ismail and other senior faculty members, students, and young teaching staff. The School of Agriculture at Okayama University has maintained a 30-year exchange relationship with UPM. Last December, the OJEIC was established on the UPM campus, serving as the Malaysian hub for promoting Japanese education. During the renewal ceremony for the MOU agreement, representatives from both universities expressed their commitment to further strengthening exchanges. This was followed by an academic seminar where Professor TAMURA Takashi and Assistant Professor Habuer from the Faculty of Environmental, Life, Natural Science and Technology introduced their research. Ms. SUGIYAMA Sachiko, Coodinator for Study in Japan, as well as Mr. Sam Zhuo Ling, a staff member of the OJEIC Malaysia Office, provided information on studying in Japan. Guest speaker Mr. FUJII Hiroki from the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) introduced short-term study programs such as the Sakura Science Program and the Networked Exchange, United Strength for Stronger Partnerships between Japan and ASEAN (NEXUS), which fosters collaboration between Japan and ASEAN in science and technology innovation. The event concluded successfully with many active questions from participants about research at universities and scholarship opportunities. The center’s official opening ceremony is scheduled for this coming May. ●Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan This project is the successor to earlier initiatives (the Study in Japan Coordinator Project and the Study in Japan Global Network Project) that began in 2014.
