Understanding Japanese Society Seminar: Cross‑Cultural Adaptation and Communication Style of Japanese People was Held in Hybrid

On June 14, the Okayama University Japan Educational Information Center (OJEIC) Myanmar office and the Japan Foundation Yangon held the hybrid event, “Understanding Japanese Society Seminar: Cross‑Cultural Adaptation and Communication Style of Japanese People”. As more young people from Myanmar seek opportunities to study and work in Japan, this seminar aimed to facilitate smoother cultural adaption in Japan by providing foundational insights into cross‑cultural adjustment and Japanese communication styles. Mr. Takeshi Asai (a lecturer at Meiji University, counselor at the Japan Foundation Japanese‑Language Institute in Urawa, and certified clinical psychologist) delivered a clear explanation of the mental health and stress challenges people often experience when adjusting to cross‑cultural environments. He shared practical coping strategies and explained how communication typically works in Japanese culture. Mr. Lwin Moe Aung, a second‑year student in the Discovery Program for Global Learners at Okayama University, shared his personal journey in Japan, highlighting how he managed culture shock. Dr. Thu Thu Nwe Aye, Associate Coordinator at OJEIC Yangon, provided information on studying in Japan, further deepening participants’ understanding of the process. During the seminar, participants had an opportunity to discuss life in a cross‑cultural environment, and Mr. Asai provided experts comments and advise. This seminar marked a new initiative to promote studying in Japan by focusing on cross‑cultural adaptation. Moving forward, we will continue to be proactive in organizing a variety of events aimed at supporting students from Myanmar and Southeast Asia in having fulfilling study abroad experiences in Japan.

Okayama University Opened Its Office for Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office) in Malaysia

On May 16, Okayama University (OU) held an opening ceremony for its new office for the Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office), located at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in Malaysia. The ceremony was celebrated by over 100 distinguished guests including His Excellency Mr. SHIKATA Noriyuki, Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia; YBhg. Dato’ Professor Ir. Dr. Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah, Vice Chancellor of UPM; Prof. Dr. Rosfarizan Mohamad, Dean of the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (FBSB) of UPM; and representatives from alumni associations, educational institutions, and other related organizations. In his congratulatory address, H.E. Mr. Shikata expressed his expectations for the project’s role in further strengthening the ties between Japanese and Malaysian universities. Dato’ Prof. Ir. Dr. Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah of UPM also shared his confidence in deepening educational and research collaboration between the two countries. President Dr. NASU of OU extended his sincere appreciation to all those who supported the establishment of the office and the project. A highlight of the event was the speech by Prof. Dr. Foo Hooi Ling of FBSB at UPM, who reflected on over 30 years of collaboration between UPM and OU, emphasizing their deep ties forged through their collaborative research projects. Prof. Dr. SUZUKI Takayoshi, Vice President for International Affairs and Alumni at OU, concluded the ceremony by introducing the project’s goals and activities. Prior to the ceremony, the OJEIC Opening Commemorative Seminar on Study in Japan was held, with participation from 90 UPM students, researchers, and faculty members. Representatives from SixERS* including Prof. Dr. ICHINOSE Yuki, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at OU, introduced their respective universities, distinctive research and academic programs. Dr. Siang Hee Tan, an alumnus of both UPM and OU, shared his personal experience of studying in Japan. Ms. SUGIYAMA Sachiko, a Study in Japan coordinator, provided general information on studying in Japan. Ms. FURUBAYASHI Rina and Ms. Farah Ammar from the Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur shared various programs and available grants. Last but not least, Mr. FUJII Hiroto from the Japan Science and Technology Agency introduced NEXUS and Sakura Science programs in relation to Japan-ASEAN cooperation. The seminar concluded with a successful interactive networking session between students and the speakers. In collaboration with universities, educational institutions, alumni associations and related organizations in both Malaysia and Japan, the new OJEIC Malaysia office is committed to supporting Malaysian students and individuals aspiring to study in Japan. *SixERs is the Consortium of Six National Universities in Japan consisting of Chiba University, Niigata University, Kanazawa University, OU, Nagasaki University, and Kumamoto University ● About the “Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office)”: The “Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office)” is a Japanese government initiative designed to accelerate the international mobility of students to and from Japan. OU was appointed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan to implement this project, which aims to double the number of international students from ASEAN regions to 103,861 within five years of the project period (April 2024 to March 2028). As of May 2025, the project has nine overseas offices in six countries: Myanmar (Yangon and Mandalay), Thailand (Bangkok), Cambodia (Phnom Penh), Laos (Vientiane), Indonesia (Jakarta, Surabaya and the University of Indonesia) and Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur). From these offices, we will promote our activities to recruit outstanding international students from ASEAN to study in Japan.

Study in Japan × Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM): Renewal Ceremony of the MOU and Academic Seminar held

On January 21, a ceremony and an academic seminar on studying in Japan were held at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), commemorating both the opening of Okayama University Japan Educational Information Center (OJEIC) and the renewal of the MOU. The event was organized under the "Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan," commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). Approximately 50 participants attended, including UPM’s Deputy Vice Chancellor Ismi Arif Ismail and other senior faculty members, students, and young teaching staff. The School of Agriculture at Okayama University has maintained a 30-year exchange relationship with UPM. Last December, the OJEIC was established on the UPM campus, serving as the Malaysian hub for promoting Japanese education. During the renewal ceremony for the MOU agreement, representatives from both universities expressed their commitment to further strengthening exchanges. This was followed by an academic seminar where Professor TAMURA Takashi and Assistant Professor Habuer from the Faculty of Environmental, Life, Natural Science and Technology introduced their research. Ms. SUGIYAMA Sachiko, Coodinator for Study in Japan, as well as Mr. Sam Zhuo Ling, a staff member of the OJEIC Malaysia Office, provided information on studying in Japan. Guest speaker Mr. FUJII Hiroki from the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) introduced short-term study programs such as the Sakura Science Program and the Networked Exchange, United Strength for Stronger Partnerships between Japan and ASEAN (NEXUS), which fosters collaboration between Japan and ASEAN in science and technology innovation. The event concluded successfully with many active questions from participants about research at universities and scholarship opportunities. The center’s official opening ceremony is scheduled for this coming May. ●Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan This project is the successor to earlier initiatives (the Study in Japan Coordinator Project and the Study in Japan Global Network Project) that began in 2014. Okayama University is responsible for Southeast Asia. Starting this fiscal year, Malaysia and Indonesia have been designated as priority countries, and we actively promoting Japanese Education in Southeast Asia, advancing the globalization of Japanese higher education institutions with our university at the core.

Okayama University Opened Jakarta Office for Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office), Jakarta in Indonesia

On September 24, Okayama University held an opening ceremony for its new office for the Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office), located in Darma Persada University (UNSADA) in Jakarta, Indonesia. At the ceremony, the office opening was celebrated by a total of 60 representatives from 16 Indonesian governmental and educational institutions, including Minister NAGAI Katsuro from the Embassy of Japan in Indonesia; Director rer. nat. Nandi, S.Pd., M.T., M.Sc., Directorate of International Affairs from Indonesia University of Education; and Rector Agus Salim Dasuki, M. Eng. from Darma Persada University (UNSADA). Additionally, Vice President for International Affairs and Alumni SUZUKI Takayoshi, Professor IGUCHI Toshihiro from Faculty of Health Sciences, and other representatives attended to represent Okayama University. From SixERS (The Consortium of Six National University in Japan composed of Chiba University, Niigata University, Kanazawa University, Okayama University, Nagasaki University, and Kumamoto University), which is the partner institution of this project, Executive Vice President for Education and International Affairs OZAWA Hiroaki, Director for International Affairs TATEISHI Koji, and Senior Specialist TSUKADA Kaori, International Affairs Division from Chiba University; Associate Professor HIROKAWA Satoshi from Institute of Education and Student Affairs, Niigata University; Advisor to the President ABE Soichiro from Kanazawa University; and Executive Director KAKUTA Kenji, International Affairs Department from Kumamoto University were in attendance. In his congratulatory address, Minister Nagai from the Embassy of Japan in Indonesia expressed his high expectations that the office's initiatives will lead to the development of human resources to serve as a bridge between Japan and Indonesia. Referring to the importance of the education sector in Indonesia, Rector Agus Salim Dasuki, M.Eng. of UNSADA expressed his welcome, “I hope that today's opening ceremony, where all concerned parties come together, will be a milestone in further strengthening the relationship between Indonesia and Japan. I trust that working together to achieve great results can have a positive effect on friendly relations between our two countries, not only in the education sector, but also in many other aspects.” After the ceremony, a commemorative workshop on the recent trend of Study in Japan was held by Okayama University. Then the Study in Japan seminar was held jointly by the SixERS, participated by approximately 400 high school and university students from the vicinity of UNSADA who wish to study in Japan. At the seminar, the SiERS representatives took the stage to introduce their respective universities and strongly appeal the attractiveness of Study in Japan. From Okayama University, Professor Iguchi gave an overview of the university and life in Okayama during Study in Japan, while Study in Japan Coordinator YAJIMA Kaori explained the project and introduced Japanese culture. The seminar provided a great opportunity for participants’ better understanding of Japan and Japanese universities. From here on, in cooperation with universities, other educational institutions, and alumni associations, the Jakarta office will extend full-scale support to Indonesian students who wish to study in Japan. ● What is the Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office)? Okayama University was appointed to implement the “Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office)” by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) - Japan in 2024. We aim to increase the number of international students from ASEAN by 2.7 times (103,861 students) in 5 years. In the previous phases, Okayama University was commissioned by MEXT - Japan to implement the “Coordinator for Study in Japan (Myanmar)” in 2014, aiming to double the number of students from Myanmar over a 5-year period. As a result, we were able to triple the number of students in 4 years, achieving our goal one year ahead. In 2018, the name of the project was changed to the “Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN,” which was recommissioned in 2019 for another 5 years, and the target region was expanded to 10 ASEAN countries. Currently, we have five overseas offices: Yangon, Mandalay, Bangkok, Phnom Penh, and Vientiane. In 2024, we will establish new ones in Indonesia and Malaysia, the most priority countries of the current phase, and will work from these bases to recruit excellent international students from ASEAN for Study in Japan.

Okayama University Opened ITS Office for Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office), Indonesia

On September 17, Okayama University held an opening ceremony for its new office for the Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office), located in Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Surabaya in Indonesia. At the ceremony, the office opening was celebrated by Rector Bambang Pramujati, Ph.D. and other representatives from ITS and Vice President KISHIDA Mitsuyo from Kumamoto University, SixERS member (The Consortium of Six National University in Japan composed of Chiba University, Niigata University, Kanazawa University, Okayama University, Nagasaki University, and Kumamoto University), which is a partner institution of this project. Additionally, Professor KADOTA Isao from the Faculty of Environment, Life, Natural Science and Technology and Director KAWAGUCHI Katsumi of International Affairs Department were in attendance, representing Okayama University. In his congratulatory address, Rector Bambang Pramujati, Ph.D. gave his encouragement and high expectations to the ITS office that the information on Study in Japan to be provided by the office will encourage students to open the doors to study in Japan. Vice President Kishida extended her willingness to work not only for Study in Japan, but also for further friendship and cooperation between Indonesia and Japan, and to provide opportunities to foster a global mindset. Professor Kadota expressed his expectations that the opening of the ITS office will further promote inter-university exchange between Indonesia and Japan. After the opening ceremony, a commemorative seminar on the office opening was held jointly by Kumamoto University and Okayama University, participated by 80 ITS students. Following the icebreaker and Study in Japan and scholarship information session by Study in Japan Coordinator YAJIMA Kaori, Vice President Kishida and Professor Kadota took the stage to introduce the attractiveness of respective universities and programs. In the future, based in the ITS Office, we will promote Study in Japan from Indonesia by all-Japan effort through visiting high schools and universities in and around the region to provide consultations and seminars on Study in Japan. ● What is the Global Network Project to Promote Study in Japan (ASEAN Regional Office)? Study in Japan Seminar Commemorates 40th Anniversary of Malaysia’s Look East Policy

The year 2022 marks the 40th anniversary since the Malaysian government adopted the Look East Policy (LEP), which aims to promote Malaysia's socioeconomic development by enabling young Malaysians to learn the secrets of Japan’s successful development. In commemoration of the 40th anniversary, Okayama University held an online seminar called “Let’s Ask Seniors!” in cooperation with the Alumni Look East Policy Society (ALEPS), the Malaysian Branch of Okayama University International Alumni Association (OUIAA) and the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) Malaysian Office. The seminar also forms part of the activities led by the Study in Japan Global Network Project (Southeast Asia) under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). The seminar provided a wide range of information on studying in Japan to young Malaysians hoping to study abroad in the future. During the seminar, participants had the opportunity to hear from alumni of Japan who have made significant contribution to the development of Malaysia and Japan, Okayama University faculty members with abundant study abroad experiences, and Malaysian students currently studying at Okayama University. First, Okayama University Vice President for International Affairs SUZUKI Takayoshi and ALEPS President Zulfiqar Zainuddin opened the seminar with remarks on the historical development of study abroad opportunities for Malaysian students in Japan and their expectations for the future, followed by OUIAA Malaysia Branch President Azri Zainal Abdin, who spoke about his own positive experiences studying in Okayama. Then, the Discovery Program for Global Learners Associate Professor USHIDA Eiko elaborated on the benefits of studying in Japan in general and Okayama University in particular. Next, four Malaysian students currently enrolled in Okayama University introduced the student life in Okayama and shared practical information for living in Japan, such as how to find halaal food. They were followed by alumnus of Japan Shamsul Haq bin Md Noh, who shared his career experiences working in both Japanese and Malaysian companies, giving participants an idea of possible career opportunities after completing a study abroad program in Japan. Finally, JASSO Malaysian Office Raymond Tan provided information for Malaysian students who want to study in Japan. Before the coronavirus pandemic, Japan has 2,000 and 3,000 Malaysian students every year (including Malaysian government-sponsored students). The Study in Japan Global Network Project (Southeast Asia) is committed to assisting students who wish to study in Japan, and aims to support the education and training of young people willing to contribute to the development of both countries.

“Japan Seminar” held in Vientiane, Laos

On 19th and 20th of February, we hosted a “Japan Seminar” in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, for high school students interested in Japanese culture and language. The event took place across three venues; namely, the Laos-Japan Institute, Phonsavanh High School, and Vientiane High School. Approximately 200 students and faculty members attended over two days. It was held as a part of the “Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN” with which Okayama University was entrusted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in Japan. This is the second seminar organized by Okayama University this year. At the seminar, Associate Professor TSUTSUMI Ryoichi, Graduate School of Humanities and Social Science, Okayama University, presented his research on linguistics, Mr. NII Yusuke Study in Japan Coordinator spoke about study opportunities in Japan, and Mr. KAWAHARA Shuhei of Okayama University staff introduced Okayama University. Additionally, Souliphone Sivixay, who currently studies at Graduate School of Environmental and Life Sciences of Okayama University, from Laos, gave a presentation based on her personal experience of living and studying in Japan. Participants described that, “The event was very valuable, providing much-needed information on studying in Japan,” while others stated that, “We are happy because the event included information on scholarships.” From these impressions, we found that students are seeking practical information related to Study in Japan, including living costs, tuition fees, scholarships, etc. Okayama University intends to continue holding similar events in Laos and hopes to expand to more regions outside Vientiane in the near future.

Study in Japan Seminar in Mandalay 2020 held in Myanmar

We held a "Study in Japan Seminar in Mandalay 2020" aiming at students interested in studying in Japan on February 1st, in Mandalay, the second largest city in Myanmar, co-sponsored by the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar and the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA). It was held as part of the “Study in Japan Global Network Project (ASEAN),” with which Okayama University was entrusted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. This is the second time this year that the university co-sponsored it. Beginning with the opening remarks by Dr. Kyaw Naing, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Minister of Education of Myanmar, Ms. TORIGOE Asami, Study in Japan Coordinator, gave a lecture on study abroad in general, Associate Professor MURAKAMI Hiroto of Nagasaki University introduced the university and research, MAJA General Secretary Daw Mo Mo San gave a presentation on the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) and those who have studied in Japan shared their experiences in Japan. At the booth for individual consultation by participating organizations, Professor NISHIHARA Yasushi of the Research Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Professor MURATA Yoshiyuki of the Graduate School of Environmental and Life Sciences also helped answering some questions from participants. Moreover, Japanese partners of the Japan Foundation assisted how to make origami at their booth. Total of 238 students visited to this seminar.
