Call for Application: UNCTAD and Okayama University Young Scientist Programme for SDGs in Japan

United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and Okayama University (OU) signed a comprehensive agreement in January 2020 and started the “Young Scientist Programme for SDGs in Japan” in order to contribute to the achievement of inclusive and sustainable development through enforcing capabilities of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI). The programme offers eligible young scientists from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and selected African countries (i.e., Cameroon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, & South Africa), the opportunity to enroll in a PhD programme at Okayama University in Japan for 3 years. The application for Academic Year 2022 has been opened and the deadline is 15 December 2021. Please review the application requirements below and contact sticourses@unctad.org for more details. [Application Requirements] Applicants who have received, or are expected to receive, a master’s degree by the time of admission in any majors related to Environmental Science, Agricultural Science, Medical Bioengineering, Medical Devices and Materials Engineering, Healthcare Science, and Human Care Innovation. Those who were born on or after April 2, 1987. Hold positions as official from line ministries; or faculty members/researchers at university or research institute. Those who obtained GPA: 2.3/3 or more. Those who fall under any of the following 1 – 3 regarding English language ability. Those who have CEFR Score B2 or more. Those who have completed a curriculum with English as the main language that meets the entrance qualifications for doctoral programs in Japan. Those who are deemed to have English level equivalent to or higher than requirement.

We attended “the 5th ASEAN+3 Rectors’ Conference” and delivered presentation on Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN

The ASEAN+3 Rectors’ Conference was held on 14th October 2021 online, and Study in Japan Coordinator NII Yusuke attended as a representative of Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN. The ASEAN+3 Rectors’ Conference is a platform consists of executives from AUN (ASEAN University Network) member universities (30 universities from 10 countries) and 18 universities from Japan, China, and South Korea. Its aim is to learn and exchange knowledge about challenges for future collaboration among ASEAN+3 network. Kanazawa University which is a member of the Consortium of Six National Universities (Chiba University, Niigata University, Kanazawa University, Okayama University, Nagasaki University, and Kumamoto University) hosted the conference this year. There were more than 100 participants at the conference and the main theme was “ASEAN+3 University Education and Graduate Employability: Sharpening the Edge”. In the conference, we had an honor to have a session to introduce Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN. After President Makino explained outline of the project and a promotional video was played, Study in Japan Coordinator Nii conducted a presentation about the project. In his presentation, he shared our achievement, prospect, and a feasibility of future collaboration between AUN member universities and this project. He also said “Most importantly, we play a role as a bridge between ASEAN and Japan in terms of education and research collaboration. We collaborate with wide range of institutions such as Ministry of Education, educational institutions including universities, alumni associations, and so on. We have been striving to not only expand new relationship but also deepen existing networks.” In our project, we will cooperate with AUN member universities and other institutions, and continue to provide useful information to ASEAN students who wish to study in Japan, universities and other educational institutions. ▼Promotional movie

We held online information sessions on Study in Japan from Cambodia and Laos for Japanese universities and educational institutions

We held the online information sessions on Study in Japan from Cambodia and Laos for Japanese universities and educational institutions as part of the Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Japan. The purpose of these sessions is to promote the acceptance of international students from Cambodia and Laos to universities and educational institutions in Japan by sharing the local information, educational situation in Cambodia and Laos as well as the recent status and trend of Study in Japan from these countries. The session on Cambodia was started with an introduction of Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN by Prof. Isao Kadota, Project Director/Professor, Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology, Okayama University. After the introduction, educational situation in Cambodia and expectation to Japanese universities was addressed by H.E. Dr. San Vathana, Undersecretary of State, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, Cambodia, followed by Study in Japan trend from Cambodia by Dr. Vuthy Monyrath, Study in Japan Associate Coordinator, Okayama University. Then we had a presentation on a track record and career path of MEXT scholarship applicants and scholars by Mr. Masayuki Izumi, Second Secretary, Embassy of Japan in Cambodia. The final presentation was about an outline of JICA training program by Ms. Shiori Tokugawa, Representative, JICA Cambodia Office. Lastly, there was a closing remarks by Mr. Hiroshi Izaki, Chief Advisor, Cambodia Japan Cooperation Center (CJCC). While the session on Laos, attractivity of and educational situation in Laos was presented by Prof. Motoyoshi Suzuki, Project Professor, Okayama University, after the explanation on the outline of Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN by Prof. Kadota. Then Mr. Yuki Nishimura, Third Secretary, Embassy of Japan in Laos, made a presentation on a track record and career path of MEXT scholarship applicants and scholars. The last presentation was about an outline of JICA training program by Ms. Sena Nukata, Representative, JICA Laos Office. To close the session, Dr. Phonekeo Chanthamaly, Director, Lao Japan Institute (LJI), made a closing remarks. Through the Q&A sessions, we could observe high level of interest and motivation on accepting international students from Cambodia and Laos. Some of the questions were “Which faculty is the most popular?”, “What’s the education level of high school and university students like?”, “What’s the trend of MEXT scholarship applicants?”. Although this was the very first attempt for us to organize this kind of information sessions on Study in Japan from Cambodia and Laos, there were 43 participants from 24 universities and educational institutions for Cambodia session. Whereas 38 representatives from 25 institutions and for Laos session. The number of international students from Cambodia and Laos has been increasing every year and this trend seems to be continued in the future. 2021 APPLICATION FOR CANDIDATE SELECTION OF JAPANESE GOVERNMENT (MEXT) SCHOLARSHIP (For Global Agriscience Program Preliminary Education in Faculty of Agriculture, Okayama University. Application Period March 15, 2021 to May 5, 2021. Period of Scholarship The scholarship period is effective for total education period (four and a half years). (Preliminary Education 6 months + University Undergraduate Course 4 years) Scholarship Benefits Allowance: 117,000 yen per month. Admission and tuition fees will be paid by Okayama University. Qualifications for Application Applicant must meet all of the following requirements. (1) Applicants must meet one of the following conditions by September 2021. ① Applicants must have completed 12 years of school education. Calling For Honjo International Scholarship Foundation

Honjo International Scholarship Foundation Guideline of Application for the Foreign Students’ Scholarship Fall 2021 (Application Period: April 1 ~ May 5, 2021) Outline of Scholarship 1. This scholarship is open to foreign students who will attend a graduate school at a Japanese university. 2. The payment of the scholarship money will be issued starting from September 2021 onwards. 3. The scholarship recipient is under no obligation to repay the amount they receive from our Foundation. 4. The period of the scholarship for the recipient is set in accordance with the shortest period of time required to complete the intended degree. 4.1. ¥200,000 per month for 1 or 2 years 4.2. ¥180,000 per month for 3 years 4.3. ¥150,000 per month for 4 years or 5 years * The student is not allowed to change his / her course after the scholarship period has commenced. * Those whose enrollment period is shorter than one year are not eligible to apply. 5. The travel grant to cover the expenses to attend an international conference will be provided to scholarship recipients, based on our scholarship provision rules. 6. The scholarship recipient is not permitted to receive any other scholarship in conjunction with the scholarship offered by our Foundation. 7. The scholarship recipient cannot gain employment other than part-time jobs related to his / her studies such as teaching assistant, research assistant, or related to international exchange affairs such as translators or interpreters while receiving our scholarship. 8. The scholarship recipient is required to participate in the individual interview and the events that the foundation organizes. 9. After graduating from our foundation, the scholarship recipient is required to attend our alumni events. Number of Scholarships Available A few students Requirements (To be eligible for applying our scholarship, the student must satisfy ALL of the requirement criteria shown below.) 1. The student who does not possess Japanese citizenship 2. The student must be enrolled as of Fall 2021 or currently applying for the academic course starting from Fall 2021 at a graduate school in Japan. Those who are already enrolled and those who are not enrolled yet (including people who are currently employed with jobs at the time of applying for the program) are both eligible to apply for this scholarship if you are going to be enrolled in Fall 2021. Those who are going to enter graduate schools in Spring 2022 should apply for the 2022 program which starts accepting applications from September 1 to October 30, 2021 (scheduled). 3. In principle, the student enrolling in a professional graduate school is not eligible to apply. However, the student who can submit a research plan is eligible to apply. 4. The enrollment duration until graduation must be longer than 12 months. 5. To be eligible, the student applying for the PhD program must start the PhD course by the age of 35. Student applying for the master’s program must start the master course by the age of 30. 6. The student must have a strong will to serve in his / her home country as a future career plan. 7. The student must have a deep understanding of international friendship and goodwill, and must attend the events organized by the foundation and take part in the network as an alumni member. 8. The student must be able to carry an everyday conversation in Japanese. Interviews will be conducted in Japanese. (no exception) How to Apply 1. Asia University Scholarship for the Students from ASEAN Countries Application Guidelines April, 2022 Course Application Period - March 8 – 19, 2021 Course A For Applicants who hold JLPT N4 or N3 -1 academic year of AU Intensive Japanese Course, and -4 years of regular undergraduate course at AU (5 years in total) *Students can elect courses from the faculties of: Business Administration, Economics, Law, International Relations, Multicultural Communication, or Urban Innovation Course B For Applicants who hold JLPT N2 or N1 4 years of AU undergraduate course *Students can elect a course from the faculties of: Business Administration, Economics, Law, International Relations, Multicultural Communication, or Urban Innovation Number of Candidates: 20 or less in total of course A and B 2.Eligibility for Applicants Applicants must fulfill all the following conditions: (1)Nationality: Any Country from ASEAN except dual citizens in ASEAN country and Japan. (9)After Graduation: Students should keep a close cooperation with AU even after graduation, and try to improve the level of trust relationship between Japan and their countries. (10)The following students are not applicable to this scholarship. Study in Japan Fair for Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia was held

 We organized two Online Study in Japan Fairs for Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia in January and February 2021 as part of the Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports Science and Technology (MEXT) – Japan. The first fair targeted Myanmar was conducted as “Online Study in Japan Fair 2021 Myanmar” from 31 January to 13 February 2021. While the other targeted Laos and Cambodia was implemented as “Online Education Fair 2021 Cambodia/Laos” from 16 to 19 February 2021. The purpose of the online fairs was to promote Study in Japan from these target countries and to support the whole processes from an entrance to a university to an employment by providing information on job hunting and employment in Japan.  It was such a great honor to have a video message for encouragement in Myanmar language by H.E. Ichiro Maruyama, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of the Union in Myanmar as well as encouragement messages by Mr.Taimei Watanabe, Chief Representative for Myanmar, Mitsubishi Corporation, Joint representative, Myanmar-Japan Platform for Human Resource Development (MJPF) and Dr.Myo Khin, President of Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA) for a special web page for the fair in Myanmar. Moreover, documents and movies that promote Study and Job in Japan were provided by MAJA, Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO), MJPF, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), The Japan Foundation (JF) and Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO).  While in Cambodia and Laos, Cambodia-Japan Cooperation Center (CJCC) and Laos-Japan Institute (LJI) supported in public relations in each country as co-hosts of the fair.  In total 28 Japanese universities and educational institutions for Myanmar and 20 for Laos and Cambodia had online consultations for those who wish to Study in Japan and to introduce scholarship programs during the fairs. The special web page was published in advance of the fairs to introduce participating institutions and to provide Study in Japan information for participants.  In Myanmar, we organized a Study in Japan fair on site annually for six times, however, the fair for 2021 had to be held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the last-minute amendment of consultation method and tools due to the sudden change of social situation in Myanmar, there were 413 participants throughout the period. While 361 attended the online fair for Laos and Cambodia which was the very first attempt for Okayama University.  We continue to organize Study in Japan fairs and seminars for those who wish to Study in Japan even amid COVID-19 pandemic to provide relevant information. 【Outline of the Fairs】 <Online Study in Japan Fair 2021 Myanmar> 1.
