Okayama University Representatives Pay Courtesy Visit to Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport and National Institute of Education in Cambodia

On June 7, Okayama University Vice President for International Affairs SUZUKI Takayoshi, Associate Professor INAMORI Takao from the Institute of Global Human Resource Development, and Study in Japan Coordinator NII Yusuke paid courtesy visits to the Higher Education Department at the Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport as well as the National Institute of Education. At the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, the delegation met with Deputy Director General for Higher Education Dr. NITH Bunlay. Representatives from Okayama University introduced Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN and its newly opened Phnom Penh Office, and sought the feasibility of cooperation in holding Study in Japan seminars and relevant events in Cambodia. Dr. NITH Bunlay recognized the importance of the Phnom Penh Office and expressed his willingness to cooperate in building a local network. Furthermore, they also discussed the possibility of concluding a partnership agreement in the near future. Then, at the National Institute of Education, the delegation met with President H.E. Dr. SIENG Sovanna and other representatives from the institute to introduce the Phnom Penh Office and discuss opportunities for future cooperation. Okayama University has had a long-standing cooperative agreement with the National Institute of Education since February 2008. In addition, H.E. Dr. SIENG Sovanna, who has studied in the doctoral program at Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology at Okayama University from 2007 to 2010, has been very supportive of the activities of Okayama University and this project, including Okayama University International Alumni Association (OUIAA) and has established a friendly relationship between the two universities. The catalyst for these visits was the opening ceremony held for the Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN Regional Office, Phnom Penh Office on June 6. Other notable visits include a meeting with Under Secretary of State for the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport H.E. Dr. SANN Vathana, where Okayama University representatives requested increased cooperation between Japan and Cambodia. It is hoped that these visits will result in strengthened collaborative efforts between the Phnom Penh Office, universities and educational institutions in Cambodia, and OUIAA to promote study in Japan.

Okayama University Opened Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN Regional Office, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

As part of its initiatives under the Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN, Okayama University opened a Phnom Penh office at the Cambodia-Japan Cooperation Center (CJCC), located in the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) campus on 1st March 2022. On 6th June, Okayama University held an opening ceremony and a total of 33 representatives from 15 Cambodian governmental and educational institutions attended, including Counselor KUBO Tomoko from the Embassy of Japan in Cambodia, Rector CHET Chealy from RUPP, and Director KHIM Leang from CJCC. Additionally, Okayama University representatives, Vice President for International Affairs SUZUKI Takayoshi and Associate Professor INAMORI Takao from the Institute of Global Human Resource Development were in attendance, while representatives from SixERS (Chiba University, Niigata University, Kanazawa University, Nagasaki University, and Kumamoto University), which is a partner institution of this project, joined online.   In her congratulatory address, Counselor KUBO Tomoko expressed her expectations for the office, saying, “The support provided by the Phnom Penh Office will help many Cambodian students who wish to study in Japan to realize their dreams. The Embassy will work closely with the Phnom Penh Office to provide them with the necessary support”. Then, RUPP Rector CHET Chealy, who has personal experience studying in Japan, expressed his desire to cooperate with the office, saying, "We would like to extend every possible support so that the Phnom Penh Office can carry out its mission smoothly. We believe that promoting studying in Japan opportunities will not only help students acquire the relevant knowledge but also strengthen the friendship between Cambodia and Japan.” In the afternoon on the same day, Okayama University held a Study in Japan Seminar jointly with SixERS partner universities in a hybrid style that includes face-to-face and online. A total of 154 participants including prospective students joined the seminar, and it became a perfect opportunity to commemorate the opening of the Phnom Penh Office. At the seminar, Cambodian students currently studying in Japan and faculty members from each partner university took the stage to introduce their respective universities and elaborate on the appeal of studying in Japan. Representing Okayama University, Vice President Suzuki introduced the university and gave a mock lecture, while Study in Japan Coordinator NII Yusuke introduced the Phnom Penh Office and the project. The Phnom Penh Office is committed to cooperating with universities, educational institutions, and alumni associations to support Cambodian students who wish to study in Japan. Academic Seminar in Cambodia

On 22 November 2019, we held an “Academic Seminar -Study in Japan-” to convey the appeal of research at Japanese universities as part of the Study in Japan Global Network Project (ASEAN) commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology at the Cambodian-Japan Cooperation Center (CJCC). In this seminar, faculty members of Tokyo Institute of Technology, Kanazawa University, Chiba University and Okayama University introduced the university and its research contents. The Vice President of the Japan Alumni of Cambodia (JAC) talked about his study abroad experience in Japan. General information on study in Japan was given by TORIGOE Asami, a Study in Japan Coordinator of Okayama University Japan Educational Information Center (OJEIC), and 150 local high school and university students participated in the consultations conducted in individual booth of each university. Following the seminar, the group paid a courtesy call to the Department of Higher Education, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, Cambodia to explain the project, and exchanged views with YOU VIRAK, Deputy Director General, on future cooperation and exchanges. Academic Seminar at Royal University of Phnom Penh, Cambodia

On 9 September 2019, Okayama University held an Academic Seminar at the Royal University of Phnom Penh in Cambodia to convey the benefits of studying at universities in Japan, which attracted approximately 50 local university students and teaching staff. The seminar was held to encourage local students to study in Japan as part of the “Study in Japan Global Network Project (ASEAN),” with which Okayama University has been entrusted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Representing Okayama University’s Graduate School of Environmental and Life Science, Professor FUJIWARA Takeshi gave a lecture on the theme “Waste Management and Recycling,” and Professor MURATA Yoshiyuki provided information regarding studying in Japan. Furthermore, a faculty member of the Royal University of Phnom Penh, who earned a doctoral degree from Okayama University, talked about the experience of studying in Japan, introducing specific stories. These presentations made the participants feel more familiar with studying in Japan. Moreover, the event provided various information regarding studying in Japan, including the Study-in-Japan Fair to be held in October, publicized by a representative of the Cambodia-Japan Cooperation Center (CJCC). After the event, the Okayama University faculty members paid a courtesy call to Japan Alumni of Cambodia (JAC). At the meeting with Vuthy Monyrath, JAC’s President, they called for cooperation in promoting the Study in Japan Global Network Project in Cambodia and had an active exchange of views on the matter. Okayama University will strive to promote this project to invite more global students to study in Japan by providing relevant information through a wide variety of events.
