Japan Alumni Reunion 2020 & Farewell for the Japanese Government Scholarship Students

On February 22, Japan Alumni Reunion 2020 & Farewell for the Japanese Government Scholarship Students was co-organized by Okayama University, Embassy of Japan in Myanmar and Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA) with approximately 120 people participated in Yangon, Myanmar. The main purpose of this event was to establish a network between participants and alumni who have studied in Japan as well as to encourage new government scholarship students going to Japan in April. H.E. Mr. Ichiro Maruyama, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Myanmar, delivered his address on his hope and encouragement towards both alumni and new students to play an active role bridging Myanmar and Japan. Dr. Kyaw Naing, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Education in Myanmar, Dr. Myo Khin, President of MAJA and Chairperson of Okayama University International Alumni Association, Professor Tomoko Tanaka, Vice Director of Institute of Global Human Recourse Development, Okayama University, made speeches followed by an introduction of Dr. Tin Htut Aung’s research on archaeology that have been done during his doctoral course at the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Okayama University. Then, a representative of the new students expressed her aspiration for her study in Japan from April and gratitude for this opportunity. Information exchange session became a great occasion to establish and strengthen a network among participants and also to further implement Study in Japan activity in Myanmar.

“Japan Seminar” held in Vientiane, Laos

On 19th and 20th of February, we hosted a “Japan Seminar” in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, for high school students interested in Japanese culture and language. The event took place across three venues; namely, the Laos-Japan Institute, Phonsavanh High School, and Vientiane High School. Approximately 200 students and faculty members attended over two days. It was held as a part of the “Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN” with which Okayama University was entrusted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in Japan. This is the second seminar organized by Okayama University this year. At the seminar, Associate Professor TSUTSUMI Ryoichi, Graduate School of Humanities and Social Science, Okayama University, presented his research on linguistics, Mr. NII Yusuke Study in Japan Coordinator spoke about study opportunities in Japan, and Mr. KAWAHARA Shuhei of Okayama University staff introduced Okayama University. Additionally, Souliphone Sivixay, who currently studies at Graduate School of Environmental and Life Sciences of Okayama University, from Laos, gave a presentation based on her personal experience of living and studying in Japan. Participants described that, “The event was very valuable, providing much-needed information on studying in Japan,” while others stated that, “We are happy because the event included information on scholarships.” From these impressions, we found that students are seeking practical information related to Study in Japan, including living costs, tuition fees, scholarships, etc. Okayama University intends to continue holding similar events in Laos and hopes to expand to more regions outside Vientiane in the near future.

Japan Alumni Meeting by Study in Japan Global Network Project in Myanmar

On 16 February 2020, Okayama University held the “Japan Alumni Meeting by Study in Japan Global Network Project in Myanmar” in Yangon, Myanmar in collaboration with the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA) and the Consortium of Six National Universities in Japan (SixERS). The purposes of the meeting were to increase the number of international students studying in Japan and to expand and strengthen the network, as a part of the Study in Japan Global Network Project (ASEAN). The meeting was started with greetings from KIMURA Kunio, Vice President for International Affairs of Okayama University, MAJA President Myo Khin, and OTANI Yoshio, Vice President (International Affairs) of Kanazawa University. Following this, TORIGOE Asami, Study in Japan Coordinator, introduced Okayama University Japan Education Information Center (OJEIC), and former international students gave a lecture on their activities after returning from Japan. About 30 participants including former students shared valuable times together that would lead to stronger cooperation in the future. On February 17th, the members of SixERS visited OJEIC office and discussed future activities at a conference of the SixERS and a meeting of the Study in Japan Global Network Project (ASEAN).

Study in Japan Seminar in Mandalay 2020 held in Myanmar

We held a "Study in Japan Seminar in Mandalay 2020" aiming at students interested in studying in Japan on February 1st, in Mandalay, the second largest city in Myanmar, co-sponsored by the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar and the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA). It was held as part of the “Study in Japan Global Network Project (ASEAN),” with which Okayama University was entrusted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. This is the second time this year that the university co-sponsored it. Beginning with the opening remarks by Dr. Kyaw Naing, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Minister of Education of Myanmar, Ms. TORIGOE Asami, Study in Japan Coordinator, gave a lecture on study abroad in general, Associate Professor MURAKAMI Hiroto of Nagasaki University introduced the university and research, MAJA General Secretary Daw Mo Mo San gave a presentation on the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) and those who have studied in Japan shared their experiences in Japan. At the booth for individual consultation by participating organizations, Professor NISHIHARA Yasushi of the Research Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Professor MURATA Yoshiyuki of the Graduate School of Environmental and Life Sciences also helped answering some questions from participants. Moreover, Japanese partners of the Japan Foundation assisted how to make origami at their booth. Total of 238 students visited to this seminar.

Academic Seminar in Cambodia

On 22 November 2019, we held an “Academic Seminar -Study in Japan-” to convey the appeal of research at Japanese universities as part of the Study in Japan Global Network Project (ASEAN) commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology at the Cambodian-Japan Cooperation Center (CJCC). In this seminar, faculty members of Tokyo Institute of Technology, Kanazawa University, Chiba University and Okayama University introduced the university and its research contents. The Vice President of the Japan Alumni of Cambodia (JAC) talked about his study abroad experience in Japan. General information on study in Japan was given by TORIGOE Asami, a Study in Japan Coordinator of Okayama University Japan Educational Information Center (OJEIC), and 150 local high school and university students participated in the consultations conducted in individual booth of each university. Following the seminar, the group paid a courtesy call to the Department of Higher Education, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, Cambodia to explain the project, and exchanged views with YOU VIRAK, Deputy Director General, on future cooperation and exchanges. Academic Seminar at Surabaya Institute of Technology, Indonesia

Holds Academic Seminar -Study in Japan- by Six National Universities at Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology, Indonesia On 20 November 2019, with the cooperation of The Six National Universities (the Consortium of Six National Universities in Japan (SixERS)), we held the “Academic Seminar -Study in Japan-” at Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology in Indonesia to convey the attractiveness of research in Japan, as a part of the Study in Japan Global Network Project (ASEAN) entrusted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. In this seminar, the faculty members of the six national universities introduced researches, the faculty members of the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology shared their experiences in studying in Japan, and explained general information on study in Japan including scholarship information. A lottery was also held for participants, and about 250 local university students and faculty members participated. At the individual consultation booth, each faculty member gave specific advice on questions from students. In his closing remarks, Mr. OTANI Jun, Vice President for International Affairs of Kumamoto University, stated, “Experience in studying abroad can not only deepen learning but also broaden your views. I would like you to take on the challenge,” encouraging the participants based on his own experience. Laos Investment Seminar – Lao Economy, Investment and Education

On 30 October 2019, we held a special seminar titled “Lao Economy, Investment and Education” as part of the Study in Japan Global Network Project at the Faculty of Letters, Law, and Economics Lecture Room Building of Okayama University. We invited to the seminar His Excellency Dr. Kikeo Chanthaboury, Vice Minister, Ministry of Planning and Investment of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, and Dr. SUZUKI Motoyoshi, Special Advisor to Minister, Ministry of Planning and Investment of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and President of the Lao School of Business and Commerce (LSBC). The event drew approximately 120 audience members, including representatives from companies in Okayama, as well as faculty, students, and staff of Okayama University. At the seminar, His Excellency Mr. Viroth SUNDARA from the Embassy of Laos in Japan delivered an address. Also, Vice Minister Kikeo and Special Advisor SUZUKI gave keynote lectures, titled “Messages to Japanese Companies and Universities” and “Lao Economy, Investment and Education” respectively. Afterwards, President MATSUDA Hisashi of the Okayama Chamber of Commerce and Industry expressed his appreciation to the lecturers. The seminar also included presentations by students of Okayama University regarding their research on foreign countries based on their experiences in Myanmar and Laos, case studies of local companies in Okayama that are doing business in Laos, and presentations by representatives from special economic zones in Laos.

Debriefing Session by a Study in Japan Coordinator held in Osaka

On 23 October 2019, Okayama University organized a debriefing session in Osaka by a Study in Japan Coordinator of Study in Japan Global Network Project (ASEAN) . The event was held to coincide with a temporary return to Japan of the Study in Japan Coordinator, TORIGOE Asami, who works at the Okayama University Japan Educational Information Center (OJEIC) in Myanmar. The event drew participants from 10 universities and one educational institute in Japan. The debriefing session began with an opening address by Dr. KIMURA Kunio, Vice President for International Affairs. Then, Prof. MURATA Yoshiyuki (Graduate School of Environmental and Life Science), Director of Study in Japan Global Network Project, explained the activities carried out at Okayama University’s bases established in Southeast Asia. In addition, Assoc. Prof. INAMORI Takao (Institute of Global Human Resource Development) reported on the Study in Japan Fair, held in August by Okayama University in Yangon, Myanmar. Study in Japan Coordinator TORIGOE gave a presentation titled, “Report on the OJEIC Activities ? Statistics on Counseling Cases and Education in Myanmar.” She talked not only about the OJEIC’s counseling on study in Japan, but also about education in Myanmar, where an education reform has been underway since 2015. In the debriefing session, participants asked about the trend of those joining the Study in Japan Fair and also about Myanmar’s Sedan Exam, the country’s matriculation exam that also serves as the high school exit exam. In addition, a wide variety of information was shared on activities carried out in Myanmar, making the event even more useful, especially in that it is expected to invigorate future activities to attract many more international students to Japan.

Academic Seminar in Vietnam

On 4 October 2019, we held the Academic Seminar at Nong Lam University in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, to explain the advantages of conducting research at universities in Japan. The seminar was organized as part of the Study in Japan Global Network Project (ASEAN), commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The seminar began with an opening address by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tat Toan, Vice President of Nong Lam University, which was followed by presentations by faculty and staff from Osaka University, Kyushu University, Kanazawa University, and Okayama University regarding each university’s research and study programs in Japan. The event drew approximately 350 attendants, including students, faculty, and staff from local universities. Since the event coincided with Nong Lam University’s job fair, it served as a good opportunity to tell many more students about the attractive features of studying in Japan. After the seminar, we paid a courtesy visit to and exchanged opinions with the Head of International Cooperation Office at Nong Lam University, who had previously studied in Japan, and Okayama University alumni. We mainly talked about interactions between the university and the Japanese universities to attract many more Vietnamese students to Japan. At Okayama University, we will continue to cooperate with local institutions and universities for the Study in Japan Global Network Project to encourage foreign students to study in Japan.
