Study in Japan Fair 2023 for Myanmar was held online

As a part of Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN, Okayama University hosted the “Study in Japan Fair 2023 for Myanmar”, an online fair for Myanmar people who wish to study in Japan and their supervisors in Myanmar, from 25th to 26th August 2023. The purpose of the fair was to promote Study in Japan from Myanmar and to support the whole process from an entrance to university to employment by providing the relevant information on Study in Japan, university admission, scholarships, job hunting and employment in Japan. The fair was organized by the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA), and Okayama University, with the cooperation of Myanmar-Japan Platform for Human Resource Development (MJPF). The fair provided the following as the main contents: 1) special website, 2) online general information seminar, 3) online group consultations. Throughout the fair, we could provide information on studying and working in Japan to 2,024 participants of this fair. On the special website, Japan Student Services Organization, IUCHI Foundation, Myanmar-Japan Collaboration Project for Fostering Medical Human Resources in addition to MAJA as an organizer and MJPF as a cooperator, contributed to providing promotional materials and videos to study and work in Japan. Besides, information on the 18 participating universities from Japan was also made available and accessible on the website. The online general information seminar was attended by 488 Myanmar people. At the beginning of the seminar, H. E. MARUYAMA Ichiro, Ambassador of the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, Dr. Myo Khin, President of MAJA, and Prof. SUZUKI Takayoshi, Vice President for International Affairs of Okayama University gave opening remarks. Afterwards, 12universities, including Okayama University, introduced respective universities, and MAJA and Okayama University Japan Educational Information Center (OJEIC) provided basic information on studying in Japan and scholarships. In the group consultations, 18 universities including Okayama University, and the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, MAJA hold sessions. A total of 1,120 Myanmar participants received explanations of each institution and had the opportunity to directly ask questions to professors and current international students from Myanmar. At the Okayama University’s session, 2 current students and 3 prospective students enrolling in October gave presentations on their study in Japan experiences, followed by a lively Q&A session. Okayama University was appointed to implement the “Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN” which is funded by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) - Japan in 2019. Our aim is to increase the number of international students from ASEAN 1.5 times in 5 years. In the previous phase, Okayama University was commissioned by MEXT - Japan to implement the “Coordinator for Study in Japan (Myanmar)” in 2014, aiming to double the number of students from Myanmar over a 5-year period. As a result, we were able to triple the number of students in 4 years, achieving our goal one year ahead. In 2018, the name of the project was changed to “Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN” and the target region was expanded to 10 ASEAN countries. Currently, we have oversea offices in Yangon, Mandalay, Bangkok, Phnom Penh, and Vientiane. From these 5 bases, we will work to recruit excellent international students from ASEAN for study in Japan.

Study in Japan Weeks 2022 in Myanmar was held online

As a part of Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN, Okayama University hosted the “Study in Japan Weeks 2022 in Myanmar”, an online fair for Myanmar people who wish to study in Japan and their supervisors in Myanmar, from 8th August to 9th September 2022. It has been about 2 years since the last fair for Myanmar was held on such a large scale. The fair was organized by the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA), and Okayama University, with the cooperation of Myanmar-Japan Platform for Human Resource Development (MJPF). The purpose of the fair was to promote Study in Japan from Myanmar and to support the whole process from an entrance to university to employment by providing the relevant information on Study in Japan, university admission, scholarships, job hunting and employment in Japan. The fair provided the following as the main contents: 1) Study in Japan information on the special website, 2) online general information seminars on Study in Japan and universities by organizers and participating universities, 3) online group consultations by participating universities. Throughout the fair, we could provide information on studying and working in Japan to 2,108 participants of this fair. On the special website, IUCHI Foundation, in addition to MAJA as an organizer and MJPF as a cooperator, contributed to providing promotional materials and videos to study and work in Japan. Besides, information on the 15 participating universities from Japan was also made available and accessible on the website. At the beginning of the online general information seminar, H. E. In total, 1,037 Myanmar people participated in the seminar. In the group consultations, 14 universities including Okayama University, and the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, MAJA hold sessions. A total of 1,474 Myanmar participants received explanations of each institution and had the opportunity to directly ask questions to professors and current international students from Myanmar. At the Okayama University’s session, Associate Professor INAMORI Takao from Institute of Global Human Resource Development introduced the university, and 3 Myanmar students currently studying at Okayama University gave presentations on their study in Japan experiences in Okayama, followed by a lively Q&A session. In 2014, the event was expanded and held as “Study in Japan Fair” for the first time to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Myanmar and Japan. In the same year, Okayama University was appointed by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) - Japan to implement the “Coordinator for Study in Japan (Myanmar)”. The fair was co-organized in 2015 then it has been held as host since 2016. The name of the project was changed to “Study in Japan Global Network Project in ASEAN” in 2018. In 2020-2021, Okayama University hosted the fair for Cambodia and Laos for the first time, and 2 fairs for Myanmar. Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni Donates Masks

On November 17, the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA) donated masks to Okayama University. MAJA was founded in 2001 by Myanmar graduates who studied in Japanese higher education. As the spread of COVID-19 in Myanmar as well as in Japan, Myo Khin, the President of the MAJA, and the Chairperson of Okayama University’s International Alumni Association, expressed his concern for the growing number of infections in Japan, and the hope to overcome difficulties together. On the day of the donation, Study in Japan Coordinator TORIGOE Asami, who returned from Myanmar, handed the masks to President MAKINO Hirofumi with Vice President for International Affairs KIMURA Kunio in attendance. Upon receiving the masks, President Makino said, “Thank you very much for your kindness. We will use the donated masks dutifully in our attempt to prevent the spread of the virus.” The masks were distributed to Myanmar students currently studying at Okayama University. They conveyed their gratitude and expressed their renewed determination to apply themselves to their studies.

Online Study in Japan Weeks 2020 was held.

We held “Online Study in Japan Weeks 2020 (Myanmar)” for Myanmar students who are interested in Studying in Japan, over a two-week period, from August 22 to September 5. 11 Universities from the Consortium of Six National Universities in Japan, and Myanmar-Japan Platform for Human Resource Development, participated in the online event. Each university introduced their own information on Facebook and the event website. Additionally, MAJA (Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni), introduced the information on entrance exams and scholarships. Students had the opportunity to contact each university directly and ask their questions or concerns by participating in group discussions took place over Zoom and other trans-communication platforms. Approximately 836 students from Myanmar participated from September 1 to September 5. Participants gave positive feedback, stating, “I want to participate in an event like this again,” and “I was able to learn valuable information about studying abroad.” Throughout the event, it became clear that students are thinking positively about future study abroad options, despite the current situation under the coronavirus pandemic. As such, our university plans to continue holding study in Japan fairs, seminars, and events for students from ASEAN countries. The Study in Japan Fair organized by Okayama University, which usually takes place in August has been postponed to January 31, 2021. Japan Alumni Reunion 2020 & Farewell for the Japanese Government Scholarship Students

On February 22, Japan Alumni Reunion 2020 & Farewell for the Japanese Government Scholarship Students was co-organized by Okayama University, Embassy of Japan in Myanmar and Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA) with approximately 120 people participated in Yangon, Myanmar. The main purpose of this event was to establish a network between participants and alumni who have studied in Japan as well as to encourage new government scholarship students going to Japan in April. H.E. Mr. Ichiro Maruyama, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Myanmar, delivered his address on his hope and encouragement towards both alumni and new students to play an active role bridging Myanmar and Japan. Dr. Kyaw Naing, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Education in Myanmar, Dr. Myo Khin, President of MAJA and Chairperson of Okayama University International Alumni Association, Professor Tomoko Tanaka, Vice Director of Institute of Global Human Recourse Development, Okayama University, made speeches followed by an introduction of Dr. Tin Htut Aung’s research on archaeology that have been done during his doctoral course at the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Okayama University. Then, a representative of the new students expressed her aspiration for her study in Japan from April and gratitude for this opportunity. Information exchange session became a great occasion to establish and strengthen a network among participants and also to further implement Study in Japan activity in Myanmar.

Japan Alumni Meeting by Study in Japan Global Network Project in Myanmar

On 16 February 2020, Okayama University held the “Japan Alumni Meeting by Study in Japan Global Network Project in Myanmar” in Yangon, Myanmar in collaboration with the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA) and the Consortium of Six National Universities in Japan (SixERS). The purposes of the meeting were to increase the number of international students studying in Japan and to expand and strengthen the network, as a part of the Study in Japan Global Network Project (ASEAN). The meeting was started with greetings from KIMURA Kunio, Vice President for International Affairs of Okayama University, MAJA President Myo Khin, and OTANI Yoshio, Vice President (International Affairs) of Kanazawa University. Following this, TORIGOE Asami, Study in Japan Coordinator, introduced Okayama University Japan Education Information Center (OJEIC), and former international students gave a lecture on their activities after returning from Japan. About 30 participants including former students shared valuable times together that would lead to stronger cooperation in the future. On February 17th, the members of SixERS visited OJEIC office and discussed future activities at a conference of the SixERS and a meeting of the Study in Japan Global Network Project (ASEAN).

Study in Japan Seminar in Mandalay 2020 held in Myanmar

We held a "Study in Japan Seminar in Mandalay 2020" aiming at students interested in studying in Japan on February 1st, in Mandalay, the second largest city in Myanmar, co-sponsored by the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar and the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA). It was held as part of the “Study in Japan Global Network Project (ASEAN),” with which Okayama University was entrusted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. This is the second time this year that the university co-sponsored it. Beginning with the opening remarks by Dr. Kyaw Naing, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Minister of Education of Myanmar, Ms. TORIGOE Asami, Study in Japan Coordinator, gave a lecture on study abroad in general, Associate Professor MURAKAMI Hiroto of Nagasaki University introduced the university and research, MAJA General Secretary Daw Mo Mo San gave a presentation on the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) and those who have studied in Japan shared their experiences in Japan. At the booth for individual consultation by participating organizations, Professor NISHIHARA Yasushi of the Research Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Professor MURATA Yoshiyuki of the Graduate School of Environmental and Life Sciences also helped answering some questions from participants. Moreover, Japanese partners of the Japan Foundation assisted how to make origami at their booth. Total of 238 students visited to this seminar.

Study in Japan Fair 2019 was held in Yangon, Myanmar

On 31 August 2019, Okayama University jointly organized a “Study in Japan Fair” in Yangon, Myanmar with the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA) and the Consortium of Six National Universities in Japan. This event was held as part of the Study in Japan Global Network Project (ASEAN) commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and was the fourth such event organized by Okayama University. Since more people in Myanmar have become interested in studying in Japan, the event attracted approximately 2,000 visitors (mainly high school and university students), who visited booths run by 40 institutions including 22 universities and seven Japanese language schools from Japan, as well as scholarship organizations and other related organizations. At the opening ceremony, Prof. Kimura Kunio, Vice President for International A9airs of Okayama University, delivered the opening address, followed by addresses by H.E. Dr. Myo Thein Gyi, Myanmar’s Minister of Education, and by H.E. Mr. Maruyama Ichiro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Myanmar. Most notably, Minister Myo Thein Gyi expressed his gratitude to Japan for providing educational support, and his expectations for young Myanmarese students to receive high-level education and learn advanced technologies in Japan. At the seminar, participants listened to explanations about scholarships and exams for studying in Japan. Myanmarese people who studied in Japan and are now employed by Japanese companies gave presentations about their career paths after graduation. This session was made possible through cooperation from the Myanmar-Japan Platform for Human Resource Development. At booths set up by participating institutions for individual consultation, many students earnestly asked questions and attentively listened to the explanations.
