Why did you choose to study in Japan?

First of all, Japan has the excellent education system and most of the universities are the research oriented. Moreover, Japan is one of the safest countries in the world. Last but not least, I chose Japan as it’s culture and nature.

How did you prepare for studying in Japan?

Fortunately, I found out the information of Kyoto University and the MEXT scholarship from a Japanese Professor who conducted the research studies in Myanmar, and I was one of the project members. During the application process, preparation for the IELTS was tough for me because it took time. Finally, I made it and applied successfully.

What are you studying/researching in Japan?

I conducted the research studies in Inle Lake, Myanmar for both the master’s and doctoral degrees. I clarified about the livelihood activities of the local people and the water quality of Inle Lake for my master’s program. I continued the research about the molecular composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) collecting the water samples of the lake for the doctoral program. I observed the condition of water quality and the source and distribution of the DOM in the lake.

What do you do in your personal time?

I worked as a part-timer during my personal time. Then, I also enjoyed the time for sightseeing around Kyoto city and visited other famous attraction places in Japan during the vacation.

Please tell us about your challenges in Japan and how you overcame them.

Although the Japanese language is not necessary for the classes in the university, it is still important for communication outside the university. The basic level of Japanese would be enough to associate with Japanese people at least in the grocery. The Kyoto University offers the Japanese classes for the international students start from the basic to advanced levels. I took some classes from the university and that helped me to communicate with the local people at a certain level.

Any encouraging message and/or advice to those who wish to study in Japan?

You may encounter some difficulties when it comes to live and study in Japan such as language barrier, beginning the academic research studies for the very first time, and meeting the new peoples with different cultures. I just want to say that you just take your time to adapt yourself to a new environment. Just start learning new studies and some Japanese bit by bit and spend your personal time visiting around Japan. Enjoy your time in Japan!
