Understanding Japanese Society Seminar: Cross‑Cultural Adaptation and Communication Style of Japanese People was Held in Hybrid
On June 14, the Okayama University Japan Educational Information Center (OJEIC) Myanmar office and the Japan Foundation Yangon held the hybrid event, “Understanding Japanese Society Seminar: Cross‑Cultural Adaptation and Communication Style of Japanese People”.
As more young people from Myanmar seek opportunities to study and work in Japan, this seminar aimed to facilitate smoother cultural adaption in Japan by providing foundational insights into cross‑cultural adjustment and Japanese communication styles.
Mr. Takeshi Asai (a lecturer at Meiji University, counselor at the Japan Foundation Japanese‑Language Institute in Urawa, and certified clinical psychologist) delivered a clear explanation of the mental health and stress challenges people often experience when adjusting to cross‑cultural environments. He shared practical coping strategies and explained how communication typically works in Japanese culture. Mr. Lwin Moe Aung, a second‑year student in the Discovery Program for Global Learners at Okayama University, shared his personal journey in Japan, highlighting how he managed culture shock. Dr. Thu Thu Nwe Aye, Associate Coordinator at OJEIC Yangon, provided information on studying in Japan, further deepening participants’ understanding of the process.
During the seminar, participants had an opportunity to discuss life in a cross‑cultural environment, and Mr. Asai provided experts comments and advise.
This seminar marked a new initiative to promote studying in Japan by focusing on cross‑cultural adaptation. Moving forward, we will continue to be proactive in organizing a variety of events aimed at supporting students from Myanmar and Southeast Asia in having fulfilling study abroad experiences in Japan.
